Atul treks across the Sahara to raise money for charity

Atul Pathak has completed a four-day trek across the Sahara Desert, raising £20,000 for Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) in the process.

Atul is passionate about RMHC, an independent charity that works with over 40 hospital trusts and hospices across the UK to provide free ‘home from home’ accommodation so sick children can have their families nearby. Last year, with the help of customers, Atul’s restaurants raised more than £57,000 for the charity through collection boxes and fundraising events. It is his passion for the charity which encouraged Atul to undertake the challenge of a gruelling four-day trek across the Sahara Desert in Morocco, accompanied by his son Naman.

Prior to undertaking his fundraising trek, Atul set a goal to raise £20,000 for the charity. To incentivise people to donate as much money as possible to the cause, Atul agreed to match the highest private and individual donation of up to £5,000. Atul donated £3,000, exceeding the highest individual donation of £2,000. Donations were also forthcoming from Atul’s staff, local organisations, MPs and other local businesses. Now back in the UK, Atul is reflecting on his achievement and, importantly, the significant donation given to RMHC.

Speaking about his fundraising trek, Atul said: “Ronald McDonald Houses and Family Rooms are located across the UK and in close proximity to children’s wards. This means that families can stay close to their child and maintain a degree of normal family life whilst they are in hospital. It is for this reason that doing the trek was so important; to raise as much money as possible to help support the work of the charity.”

Adding his thoughts about the fundraising trek, Naman Pathak said: “The trek across the Sahara was a very special experience and one that I will never forget. Although the trek itself was physically tough, I am glad that I was able to do this with my dad and support his ongoing activities to raise money for Ronald McDonald House Charities.”
