Atul Pathak, owner of Appt Corporation and the man behind 20 McDonald’s restaurants in north and north-west London has been shortlisted for a West London Business Award in recognition of the training and development of his 1,600 members of staff.
Mr Pathak said: “The people across our 20 restaurants are our best asset. They give that important first impression and the lasting experience of exceptional service so it is vital that I ensure that they are able to make the most of their career opportunities.
“From the People Promise displayed in every crew room with my personal email address on, to the apprenticeships and degree courses that we provide, I believe that instilling a sense of achievement and pride through continuing personal development is key in creating an excellent experience for our customers. McDonald’s already provides an excellent career development scheme. I am always eager to go that one step further.”
The announcement of the award winner will be on November 28th.
Comments from two current staff members whose Appt Corporation training has enabled them to progress quickly in their careers:
Tek Pathak (no relation to Atul Pathak)
“I started working part-time at McDonald’s nine years ago whist studying Business Management at University. The career opportunities on offer at the company encouraged me to take on a full time role once I had graduated. I’ve always wanted to continue developing my learning and business knowledge, so I was very keen to apply for the Foundation Degree. It really helped me to a gain a solid insight into how the business operates and I will definitely be encouraging my team to take the degree if they get the opportunity to. I really do believe that I would not have been able to study for a degree or receive the level of support that I have. The great thing about the qualifications that employees can study for is that they are nationally recognised which means they can use them as a way to access further development opportunities. The training and development opportunities available at Appt Corp truly give employees like myself transferrable skills whether they decide to stay and move up the career ladder with us or use them to excel in other areas. I never felt limited in terms of my development because there is a culture of training, learning and development within the company.
“There are very limited companies who invest so much in their employees and I am very proud to be part of a company that places such a high level of emphasis on their employees’ development. There is a clear progression route within our company and training and development is a key part of our values, there is a range of qualifications on offer from math’s and English all the way to a degree. It is because of the time, money, commitment and effort invested in me that I love what I do and I love being a part of Atul Pathak’s team at Appt Corporation.”
“I joined Appt Corp in 2009 as a Crew Member and I only thought that I would stay for a couple of months to gain experience. However a couple of months into my role I realised the opportunities available at Appt Corp to all its employees. Because I was new to the UK, English was not my first language and I didn’t have the confidence to talk so much with colleagues and customers. I knew I wanted to improve myself and my Business Manager told me about the Maths and English qualifications the company offers.
“I saw this as a perfect opportunity to improve myself and so within a few months of joining I had gained a Level 2 qualification in Literacy and Numeracy. I became a Crew Trainer subsequently after gaining these qualifications. As a Crew Trainer I supported all new and existing Crew Members with their training on the job. My Business Manager recommended that I study the Apprenticeship programme which had been introduced to all stores and this is something I jumped at the chance of applying for. I was really proud when I had completed my apprenticeship with my Level 2 Apprenticeship qualification being the first Apprentice to qualify in my store.
“I have also gained a qualification in Shift Management this led to my promotion as a Shift Manager and I was excited of taking my first step into management within my store. Last year I was promoted to Assistant manager, it was such a great feeling for me to have achieved so much in such a short period of time. I feel really privileged to be part of a company that values each employee. My self-confidence has gained so much, my business knowledge and people skills have improved vastly, I did not think that one day I would be in a management position. Atul Pathak truly recognises his employees potential; I have also been given the opportunity to conduct presentations in local schools and career events. I would never have the opportunity to achieve what I have or gain the qualifications that I have had it not been for Atul. I feel that not only have I gained qualifications and transferable skills to apply in my work life but I have gained invaluable skills for life.”
